And the social commentary wasn't as spot-on and sharp as it usually is. The jokes just didn't land-there's an entire book of Karen jokes, and how is it appropriate to have female freedom fighters written off as Karens-and were lacking. This whole book feels like going through the motions and lacks the heart the others in the series possess. (Not surprising as LR's whole schtick is Bratty Heroines, so they usually have maturity issues.) John is not an enjoyable scythkin to read (I think he's my least favorite of the batch I would even go so far as to say I actively dislike him), and Itch is very repetitive in her thought process, which is shallow and juvenile. Relevant to what? Nothing is more ephemeral than a hot topic.” Aubyn wrote in his novel “Lost for Words” (2014). “The measure of a work of art is how much art it has in it, not how much ‘relevance,’” Edward St. Timeliness in fiction is nearly always overpraised. This book is the first of an anticipated four novels in a seasonal cycle, in the manner of Vivaldi’s violin concertos or George Winston’s Schroeder-like piano albums, and clearly it was written quickly. This is no strong claim on our attention. It takes place after the events of June 23, when Britain voted to leave the European Union. When Ali Smith’s eighth novel, “Autumn,” was published in Britain last fall, it was hailed as the first serious work of post-Brexit fiction. ![]() Paddy whacked by tj english7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() In 1995, English published Born to Kill, about a Vietnamese gang based in New York City's Chinatown. I really didn't like much about this story. I do think I will give Raymond's book a go.Ĭaution!! Unpopular and dissenting opinion ahead. As for the rating, this is really a case of It's me, not you because it was a well writing story featuring family, addiction, love and growth. Both were flawed characters, but they both felt much and tried hard to work with the hand they were dealt. The author did a remarkable job humanizing Michael and Nunzio. I honestly had a hard time appreciating the sex scenes because I felt Mikey was just hiding and would have a melt down shortly after sex. I felt so bad for Nunzio and kept waiting for Mikey to pick himself up and go. He was a broken character because life had dealt him a crummy hand not including his little brother Raymond and his best friend Nunzio Medici. Michael "Mikey" Rodriguez drove me to drink several glasses of wine because his head was a dark and painful place to be. The writing was a four star but I had a hard time with the addiction and depression part. Realistic protrayal of addiction and recovery ![]() |
